One of the perks of doing radio and television is that
you get to meet hundreds of celebrities during the course your career. Many are
not at all like the parts they portrayed.
A few are exactly like their
characters. This man is the personification of the roles he created. He is the most
memorable guest that ever graced my studio. This wonderful man who I was
privileged to call my friend created two of the
most recognized and beloved characters on TV.
Bob Keeshan
was
a gentle man who began his career as an NBC page in New York. In 1948, staff
announcer Bob Smith approached the 20 year old Keeshan and asked for his help in producing a new
children's show. The result was the most successful children's show in the
history of television.
Clarabell was born and the Howdy Doody Show molded
and entertained a generation of young TV viewers. In 1955,
Bob Keeshan
gave birth to the character for whom most will remember Keeshan. Captain Kangaroo remained a CBS morning hit for decades. But,
let's hear the story from Bob himself. Here is a three part interview originally
simulcast on ABC affiliate WKRS in Waukegan, Illinois and on USA Cable.
Now, through the facilities of You Tube we may say to the world, Goodmorning,
Captain!

Bob Keeshan is no longer with us but his creations and gentle manner have positively influenced several generations of youngsters: many of whom are now grandparents. We salute you, Captain on a job well done.
